ETS offers TOEFL iBT at an authorised test centre and as a Home Edition monitored by a live proctor. Confirm the format your institution accepts, then check availability and requirements for the option you intend to use.

A test-centre appointment involves travel and centre check-in. An at-home appointment requires a suitable room, equipment and reliable connectivity. Compare those practical requirements as carefully as the fee; a familiar test name does not make every delivery option suitable for every applicant.
Use preparation material for the 2026 format
ETS’s current content page describes reading, listening, writing and speaking, with approximately two hours allowed for completion. It includes tasks such as writing an email and taking an interview. Because some parts adapt, item counts and timing may vary.
Check that a preparation course or mock test reflects the current version before using it to plan your timing. If a resource refers to an older format, use the official content page to see what changed rather than assuming its task list is complete.
The TOEFL score scale changed in January 2026
For tests from 21 January 2026, ETS reports section scores and an overall score on a 1–6 scale in half-point increments. During a two-year transition, the report also includes a comparable overall score on the 0–120 scale.

If a university still publishes a requirement using the earlier scale, ask how it applies to your test date. Keep its written guidance with your application plan. Do not treat a self-calculated conversion as an admissions decision.
