How the PTE options differ

Test comparison: a starting point, not an eligibility decision

Pearson distinguishes Academic and Core by their contexts and uses. Academic and Academic UKVI share test content and scoring, but the UKVI version supplies the reference needed for relevant UK applications. Do not infer visa eligibility from a seller’s product label.

A simple decision process

  1. Read the requirement in full

Check your course, employer or application instructions. Copy the test name exactly, including any UKVI designation.

  2. Record score requirements

Write down both overall and individual skill requirements. Do not use a general score-conversion chart as a substitute for a stated requirement.

  3. Verify the voucher product

Match the offer to the test name and country. Ask for explicit confirmation if the product simply says “PTE”.

  4. Review the booking before payment

The selected exam and appointment should match your plan. Correct a mismatch before completing the transaction.

If the wording in your application is unclear, get clarification from the organisation setting the requirement. Choosing a test on an assumption may create a more expensive problem than paying a slightly higher booking price.

Mistakes this comparison can help you avoid

  • Buying Academic because it is familiar when the requirement names Core.
  • Assuming every voucher can be used for both Academic and Core.
  • Treating a general study-abroad recommendation as an application-specific requirement.
  • Choosing UKVI solely because the destination is the UK, without checking the requirement.
  • Comparing prices across products that cover different tests or countries.

The PTE exam guide covers the wider preparation and booking plan. The voucher guide explains the conditions that should appear on the offer.
